Engineer Development Program – Project Engineer

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Wells Engineering Development Program (EDP) participants work directly with Wells PEs to gain valuable, hands-on experience in field services, quality control and engineering design. EDP participants will work through the program phases at their own pace. As you become proficient, you’ll progress to the next level or phase, exploring different opportunities and discover a career path that best meets your skills, ambitions and expertise.

QUALITY SYSTEMS ENGINEER – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The first stage of the Wells EDP occurs withing our Operations Division in the Production Plant as a Quality Systems Engineer. This is one of the most important aspects of engineering with Wells. Understanding what goes into operating in a manner that produces safety, quality, and efficiently is an essential attribute for engineers.

  • Work with Quality Control Department to:
    • Perform Quality Checks on product manufacturing lines
    • Perform Quality Checks on product finishing processes
    • Perform Quality Checks on concrete mix performance (in Lab)
    • Take and pass American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field 1 Test
    • Understand the Architectural Finish applications and considerations for successful results with each
    • Enter and analyze data/metrics to work on root cause and continuous improvement initiatives
    • Conduct site visits when problems arise and determine root cause, then report to operations and help develop new processes and procedures
    • Take and pass Precast Concrete Institute (PCI) I/II Test
  • Work with Plant Engineer to:
    • Review production drawings for potential quality or safety issues
    • Work with project engineer and drafting team to mitigate information issues
    • Develop recommendations for new processes and concepts that can bring enhancements to the process
    • Review blocking and handling techniques of stripping, handling, stockpiling, and shipping of all product

Mitigate day to day issues that arise to ensure the plant continues to move smoothly

FIELD ENGINEER – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITES

The second stage of the Wells EDP occurs within our Construction Services Division on the job site as a Field Engineer. Understanding what goes into constructing buildings in a manner that produces safety, quality, and efficiently is vital for engineers to design and facilitate a successful project.

  • Shadow a senior field supervisor and assist in the layout process
  • Read/interpret blue prints and communicate the work plan to crew
  • Use survey equipment to ensure product is properly aligned vertically and horizontally
  • Coordinate with dispatch daily for load times and sequence
  • Supervise the installation process on job sites
  • Troubleshoot problems that arise and help resolve them
  • Create weekly progress reports
  • Assist field operation managers with conducting early job site visits to coordinate start date, crane and truck access and project concerns with clients
  • Source necessary construction equipment and materials to complete the project
  • Coordinate shipping schedules, appropriate equipment and crew size needed for the project
  • Coordinate daily job duties
  • Coordinate mobilization to the next site efficiently and effectively
  • Develop Crane Pick plans and Product Bracing Plans for constructability
  • Support the laborers and operators at the project to complete tasks

DESIGN ENGINEER I – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The final stage of the Wells EDP consists of hands-on experience in engineering design, working as a Design Engineer 1 in tandem with Wells Design Engineers to design precast concrete products for a variety of projects.  The knowledge and understanding achieved in the previous stages will allow for a successful, quality, and safe design and facilitation of a project to stay on schedule.

  • Perform Handling Design for various Precast Concrete Products
  • Perform Building Review and calculate gravity load paths throughout a building
  • Design and Size structural components of a buildings
  • Perform lateral analysis of building and trace load path throughout
  • Conduct design of building connections
  • Research and review potential new ideas and products as necessary
  • Manage D&E team as the team lead to facilitate proper coordination and communication
  • Manger project and Project Manager of project to ensure a successful project from all aspects from start to finish

You’ll be prepared to take the PE exam and obtain your PE license.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required
  • EIT certification preferred
